Ambitions , Life and a journey of ten minutes

Ambition” – Probably one of the mightiest words of the English language. A single word which characterizes the nature of a human being and the very reason of human existence. It is this world which shapes our behavioral and emotional aspects. Every thing, good or bad, is driven by this single word. For some their ambition is to be rich, for few it is love, for few it is God and for others it is power, the list is countless. This ‘ambition’ controls the taste and rationale behind many things. The greed, the anger, the love, the peace whatever we see in our life is the result of this ambition. The more materialistic our ambitions are the more we are dragged to sadness, agony and pain while the lesser they are the more we feel happiness, joy and peace.

So what are my ambitions? Or do i want to end my ambitions? Honestly, I never thought about it until Dec 24, 08.

Dec24, 08

It is just another shining day of Indian winter. Most of my colleagues and friends are/or planning for the year end vacation, but ‘ambitious’ me have different plans. It is the time to put things into action which I always dreamt or rather aspired for. My ambitions, mostly if not all, are driven by money. No I am not greedy but I need it badly to pay off the liabilities and the family needs. Though nobody ever demanded it from me but intelligent and responsible I feel that there is huge responsibility on my shoulders which I must carry out in order to justify my existence here. I must meet the expectation that many have put on me unspoken. So this is the day when I’d put the very first step on this path. God only knows what’ll happen next but I must do my karma. The day is going fine and the first step is placed as per expectations.

I am joyous and now feel more ambitious (now the greed starts coming in). I draw plans of future and how the things should stand on. I make many ideas and recap how people have deceived me and how I can repay them back! I take the quilt on me while drawing my jealously and hated plans. At the same time I am watching a clip of a goat being slaughtered in Punjab. I feel uneasiness and giddy ….

Dhakkkkk…. I open my eyes. Who am I? Where am i? What is this world and where is earth. I recall I am a boy and why can’t I remember anything. I feel something and touch my cheek. My anti-glare glasses are hanging on my right ear with the left glass half broken. Holy shit.. how I landed on the floor ? Why am I not breathing normally? I saw my laptop, it got smashed onto floor and is now laying flat. I feel more uneasiness as I regain consciousness… ah something is hurting… I touch my lip, oh my tooth smashed into my upper lip and I saw the blood on my finger. All this happen in seconds. My nerves activate my defensive system. I must get water. I get up and rush to kitchen.. gulp.. gulp one glass down, now second.. dhakkkkk.. once again I fell and the glass trembles and the sound resonates with few other utensils. Why the hell I don’t call my friend who is sitting in the next room watching tv? No, I am a man and am brave enough to tackle. Hell the man ego is so bad…. My defensive system replies hey what the fuck? Do you want to die? I get up and call my friend as he turns up I again fell on the bed.

Now I have control over my mind and can take logical decisions. Awwwwwkk.. the food is in my food pipe from down my belly. I must spew. I rush towards the balcony and get the job done… now I am feeling better while I open the tap to fill bucket with water to clean the mess. Why should I bother my friend? Oh no ego again. He is more than supportive and takes good care of me while making lemonade at the same time.

I am back to normal and relaxed.

Is it?

I am left behind with so many things. Where are my plans? Where is my greed… I just experienced something which I have never before. What is life? We always run after so many things while we are not sure about it. Life can deceive us at any time without any information or hint !

I am thinking and I just learned a new truth of life. A truth that I can not explain or put in words but something which I just discovered!

I don’t know how will this impact on my life but yes I have learned and experienced a moment which I can not distinguish – good or bad.

And the ambitions? Well they continue but with a vengeance !

Population bomb ticking in America

Those of us who deal with population issues all the time are frequently confronted by people who believe the population problem belongs to someone else. It traces, in their view, to poor Indians who do not understand how to use condoms, or to Mexican peasants who invade our country to steal our jobs, or to the Catholic hierarchy which persists in its irrational opposition to the use of effective birth control methods. But Indian peasants mostly want the children they have – they know how to use condoms. And at the moment Mexican immigration is probably a net benefit for the United States – although in the middle term it could become a disaster. And crazy as the Vatican's position is, relatively few Catholics pay any attention to it. After all, Italy has the smallest family size in the world!

But it just does not wash. Yes, poor nations have serious population problems, but in many respects rich nations have worse ones. Nothing recently has made the degree of overpopulation in the United States more obvious than George Bush’s confrontation with Iraq. If the United States had stabilized its population in 1943, when it was in the process of winning the largest land war in history, today it would just have 135 million people. Assume that per-capita energy consumption nevertheless had grown to today’s level – that is, our smaller population was still using sloppy technologies: gas guzzling automobiles, inefficient light bulbs and pumps, poorly insulated buildings, and so on. Even if its citizens were just as profligate users of energy as we are, the 135 million United States citizens could satisfy their energy appetite without burning one drop of imported oil or one ounce of coal.1

Of course, if we had been smart, we also would have become energy efficient and would have made a transition to some form of solar-hydrogen economy. It has been estimated that an energy efficient America could have the goods now supplied by energy use at an expenditure of about one-third the energy now employed. And it is crystal clear that for the environmental health of the globe as a whole, and the United States itself, a drastic reduction in the use of energy technologies that place greenhouse-enhancing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere is mandatory.

I = P A T

The impact of a population on the environment can be roughly viewed as the product of three factors: the size of the population (P), the level of per-capita consumption or affluence (A), and the measure of the impact of the technology (T) used to supply each unit of consumption. This provides the short-hand equation I=PxAxT which, although oversimplified (because the three factors P, A, and T are not independent), provides a basis for comparing the responsibility of different nations or groups for environmental deterioration.

Using the I = P A T equation, one can see that the population problem in the United States is the most serious in the world. First of all, the P factor is huge – with 250 million people, the United States is the fourth largest nation in the world. And compared with other large nations, the A and T factors (which when multiplied together yield per capita environmental impact) is also huge – on the order of twice that of Britain, Sweden, France, or Australia, fourteen times that of China, forty times that of India, and almost 300 times that of a Laotian or Ugandan. In per-capita energy use, only a few oil producing nations in the Middle East such as Qatar and Bahrain, plus Luxembourg and Canada, are in our league, and those nations have comparatively tiny populations. When the population multiplier is considered, the total impact of the United States becomes gigantic, several hundred times that of Bangladesh.

Those multipliers are based on per-capita commercial energy consumption, which is the best surrogate for A x T that is readily found in government statistics. The contributions of very poor countries to environmental deterioration are underestimated by these statistics, since they don’t include the impacts of use of “traditional” energy sources (fuelwood, dung, crop wastes) that comprise 12 percent of energy use globally, but a much larger component in poor countries. Considering them would not change the U.S. position as the planet’s primary environmental destroyer, though.

That preeminence makes sense intuitively, too. Few Laotians drive air-conditioned cars, read newspapers that transform large tracts of forest into overflowing landfills, fly in jet aircraft, eat fast-food hamburgers, or own refrigerators, several TV’s, a VCR, or piles of plastic junk. But millions upon millions of Americans do. And in the process they burn roughly a quarter of the world's fossil fuels, contributing carbon dioxide and many other undesirable combustion products to the atmosphere, and are major users of chlorofluorocarbons, chemicals that also add to the greenhouse effect and attack Earth’s vital ozone shield.

We have destroyed most of America’s forest cover (replacing a small fraction of it with biologically impoverished tree farms) and are busily struggling to log the last of the old growth forests in the Northwest, threatening the long-term prosperity of the timber industry, in part to service the junk bonds of rich easterners. The western United States is one of the largest desertified areas on the planet from overgrazing by cattle and sheep – not because we need the meat (only a small portion of our beef comes from the arid West), but because of the political power of ranchers in the western states and a nostalgic view of western history. And Americans have contributed mightily to the destruction of tropical forests by purchasing products ranging from beef to tropical hardwoods derived from forests.

Furthermore, each additional American adds disproportionately to the nation’s environmental impact. The metals used to support his or her life must be smelted from poorer ores at higher energy cost, or transported from further away. The petroleum and water he or she consumes, on average, must come from more distant sources or from wells driven deeper. The wastes he or she produces must be carried further away, and so on. Activities that created little or no environmental burden when the United States had a small population – such as putting CO2 into the atmosphere by burning fossil fuels – increase that burden with every additional individual when the population is large.

India's voyage to Moon. coming soon next month

Having passed a rigorous test to gauge its resilience against harsh space environment, Chandrayaan I, the Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) first mission to the moon, now awaits a launch date to begin its 4,00,000-km voyage.

The first possible date for Chandrayaan’s launch could be October 19, said T.K. Alex, director of the ISRO Satellite Centre.

The first “launch window” could be between October 19 and 28, said Dr. Alex, addressing presspersons at the satellite centre here on Thursday. If the weather does not permit this, the launch could take place in November or December, he added.

“Our goal at the moment is to reach the satellite to the moon’s orbit on either November 8 or November 23 when the orbital planes of the spacecraft and that of the moon will intersect,” said M. Annadurai, Project Director for Chandrayaan.

The satellite will undergo two more tests next week — a vibrations test and an acoustics test — to see how the systems hold up. In the vibrations test, the satellite will be “shaken”, much the same way that it will be during launch, and in the acoustics test, the satellite will be exposed to high levels of noise that the launch will produce, said Dr. Alex.

The ambitious lunar mission will bring back clues about the origin of the moon, gather evidence of the presence of water and capture the clearest pictures yet of the moon’s topography, he said.

‘Piggyback payload’

An important objective is to map material that may be of economic value such as uranium and thorium, said P. Sreekumar, head of the Space Astronomy Instrumentation Division. “We will be covering the entire electromagnetic spectrum through the 11 experiments on board,” he said.

The 11 experiments will include a “Moon Impact Probe” which is a “piggyback” payload that will detach itself and impact the moon with three instruments — a video camera, a radar altimeter and a mass spectrometer, he said.

The 1,380-kg satellite will have a PSLV launch from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota and using its own rocket engine, will be placed into an orbit around the moon at a distance of 100 km from the lunar surface.

How much is your salary mate? !

Have you ever been asked this question? I’m sure many would have asked you many times and again I’m sure most of the times you have replied with a lie. Its not like that you always exaggerate it but sometimes you minimize what you actually earn.

I believe strongly that this is one of the stupidest questions of all time. Many of us lie while replying to this question and almost no one believes that what he has just heard is truth, even the person replying is speaking truth ! To me, asking this question, is like asking “are you virgin?” I never feel so embarrassed in replying to other questions but this one, and honestly, I have never felt comfortable while replying to. I spent so much time understanding the origin of this question - Why people usually ask this question after few meetings and why do people respond with a lie and why do people always think that the person in question is lying, and here I come up with some answers.

Let’s explore this!

Why people ask this question?

I strongly believe that this question is related to human evolution. Human race has evolved so much than other animals because we were the only species who knew how to compare and then analyze. We compared ourselves with rest of the animals and found ourselves different. We compared few animal species and found few of them suitable to our needs. We compared rocks and found gold. We compared among ourselves and found caste. We compared castes and found religions and so on.

It’s our human tendency to know from whom we are better and from whom we are not. You go to a restaurant and compare the food with other restaurants. You make a judgment and decide which restaurant is better. Same applies to places, countries etc. We always compare other countries/towns with our country/town and decide if they are better than ours. So during the course of our evolution, comparison has become integral to us and we compare things unknowingly that we are comparing them. Next comes the parameter. Parameter is anything which we can compare. So obviously when two person meet, the parameter is money. So they ask it quite simply “How much you earn dude?” hoping to get an honest reply so that they can compare if the person in question is richer than him or not.

So its just the curiosity, the curiosity to determine if you rank higher monetarily than someone else, give birth to this question. And this question might be very embarrassing to someone else.

Why do people reply with a lie?

Again the answer stems from human psyche, the human tendency to hide its inability and to keep things secret and exclusive (in this case exclusive to one himself/herself). As we have asked the same question to many others, we have a feeling of why is someone asking the same from you. Why would you conceal such a thing which can potentially lower your ranking in others eyes.

Since this is not a simple yes/no answer and you have to tell something, you ponder what to tell. You tend to think if you tell the truth it might lower your reputation, in this quest you boast that you earn so and so just to make impression. To make an impression on other, people usally lie about their earnings (That is why almost every man lies to his girl friend about his salary)

And what if you want to have a pity of someone else? What if you are looking for a favor from someone else? You simply reply that you earn much less! Wonderful isn’t it. But this is not the only possible scenario. Sometimes you are caught up in a group where you already know that the group is surely earning lesser than you and suddenly someone throws the question. Not wanting to make an impression or not willing to let other think that you are lying if you tell them the real amount, you lie to them that you earn less. Also sometimes you think if you tell them that you earn more, they may demand something from you, so you keep a low profile with a lie.

And these situations go on and on and you speak lie most of the times!

Now the final question …..

Why do people think that the person replying is lying ?

This is the simplest one. Just like you have lied to many others, they have also lied to others. So they got a feeling that the person is lying no matters what amount you tell !!

But above all, this is a very stupid question to ask. It is against someone’s right to privacy. It directly links to someone’s financial health and many a times, people may not feel comfortable replying to this. I consider asking this question as out of etiquettes and feel the same when asked about.

So please stop asking this question. Money never makes a person noble; it is only the deeds done by someone which actually matters.

All right ! Take care

.... n btw what’s your salaray? Hehehe :)

Reducing Canada's immigration backlog

- Referred from Canada's official immigration website

Canada was built on immigration. With more than 15 million people from every corner of the globe coming to Canada since Confederation, our immigration program is one of the largest and most successful in the world.

But with success come challenges. There are approximately 925,000 people waiting in line—almost enough to meet our immigration targets for the next four years.

And yet hundreds of thousands more people continue to apply every year. Under the old law, all applications had to be evaluated and processed to a final decision. The backlog continued to build and threatened to reach 1.5 million by 2012 if we did nothing. This would have meant a wait time of 10 years for applicants.

Applications in the largest backlog—federal skilled workers—used to be processed in the order they were received, regardless of whether the applicants’ skills or professions would enable them to find a job in Canada.

There are probably many millions of people in the world who meet the criteria to enter Canada and, among those, several million who would like to do so. We had to have an immigration system that effectively balanced Canada’s own needs with its popularity as a destination. We also wanted to reduce wait times so that families were reunited faster and the workers we needed arrived sooner.

That’s why, on March 14, the Government of Canada introduced changes to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. The changes aim to modernize Canada’s immigration system and shorten the time it takes to immigrate to Canada. They were approved by Parliament on June 18, 2008.

Those who submitted an application before February 27, 2008—the day after the federal budget, of which these changes were a part—will continue to be processed under the old system. But the backlog will stop growing and finally start coming down.

Going forward, anyone will still be able to apply, but CIC will no longer be required to process all new applications submitted on or after February 27, 2008. Applications not processed in a given year can be held for future consideration or returned with a full refund to the applicant, who will be welcome to reapply at another time.

The Minister will have the authority to issue instructions to immigration officers on the processing of applications, including with regard to jobs available in Canada, so that people with those skills and experience can be brought to Canada more quickly. The Minister’s instructions will apply to categories of applicants, not individuals.
It is important to note that our objectives for family reunification and refugee protection will not be affected.

Our annual levels plan will continue to establish clear targets for the number of immigrants we intend to welcome every year. For example, in 2008, Canada plans to accept between 240,000 and 265,000 new permanent residents, including approximately 70,000 in the family class, some 30,000 protected persons, and at least 20,000 provincial nominees to help provinces meet the demand for workers, many of whom are lower skilled.

The decisions on individual applications will be made by CIC immigration officers. The Minister cannot reverse these decisions.

The Minister’s instructions will be consistent with the overall objectives of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, which are to support Canada’s economy and competitiveness, reunite families and provide protection for those in need.

They also will be consistent with the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, which protects against discrimination on such bases as race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, sex, age and mental or physical disability.

Instructions will be developed based on input from the provinces, territories and stakeholders. The instructions will be made public and will reflect our commitments to provinces and territories. They will be published in the Canada Gazette, reported in the Department’s annual report to Parliament and published on CIC’s website.

The measures will do a much better job of responding to our economic and regional needs, reducing wait times for new applicants, reducing the backlog and allowing newcomers to provide a better life for themselves and their families. They will provide the flexibility to process applicants with the skills Canada needs, as is the case in many competitor countries, including Australia and New Zealand.

The plight of Indian Railways - Part 2

So now you have spent few hours at stinky platforms, gazed around many things and observed the whole India. But story never ends here .. picture abhi baki hai mere dost !!

The Train : The conditions of trains are improving but they are yet far away from becoming truly world class. The trains are filthy and very less is being done to made it more comfortable. Some trains are in such poor shape that it is difficult to travel. Its almost next to impossible to travel in second class coach. The first class coaches are good but not very comfortable. The best thing about Indian Railways is the cost of tickets. AC coaches are usually affordable and the tickets for other classes are cheap, but the train in itself can be very dirty.

Trains are usually poorly maintained. Many fans are not working. The seats are not much comfortable. Sometimes the windows won't shut completely, so if you are traveling in winters and your seat is next to window, it can spoil your journey. AC coaches provide blankets etc but these are usually third grade, so it is advisable to carry your own blankets etc. Another point which usually people don't care about but then suffer lately is that "don't forget to loo before you leave from your home!". The toilets are perhaps the worst maintained toilets in the world. Avoid it as long as you can. All toilets even in AC coaches stink. Moreover people perhaps don't know how to use them, that could also be one of the reason to have you look at other people's shit on floor. It could be a worst experience really. If unfortunately you have to visit it try to be as fast as you can, though i don't need to advice here as no one would dare to sit for long. There is no soap available so don't forget to carry your own soap! And if you are a women probably all eyes would be on you, yes bear it and is a fact :(

The situation is so bad that in the rail budget of 2008-09 special fund was reserved to upgrade the toilets in trains. Also most of the toilets are of Indian style, so if you are an outsider or has little experience using hands better avoid it or learn it !

Inside The Train :Be advised that there are not only you (people with reserved tickets) there are many others to share the seat with you in a reserved compartment though they don't have reserved tickets ! Bribery is paramount in Indian railways and TTE usually charge the ticketless passengers (as bribe and not as fine) and allocate the seats at their own will. Sometimes there would be

many daily passengers who will storm inside the reserved compartment to disturb the passengers with tickets. These fellow passengers even don't have valid tickets to travel on that route yet they never pay any fine. They are huge in numbers so TTEs usually avoid ticket checking when they are in coaches. They talk rude with the fellow passengers sometimes using obscene language. They disturb the whole compartment causing inconvenience and revenue loss to railways. It would be appropriate to call them the 'goons of the trains'. I recently had a chance to look them more closely and i have uploaded a pic of them. The sardarji(one with a turban) in the photo was a genuine passenger with valid ticket who was forced to sit on the upper seat as his lower seat was occupied by these goons.

Other than these ticketless passengers, there are many unauthorized vendors selling chains to food items to household things. Some even sell medicines ! This makes the train crowded and noisy, however, many funny things can also happen ! So all in all it depends upto you to decide whether you enjoyed it or not !

Other Things : There could happen many nasty things. Baggage theft is common, there have been some incidents when passengers were intoxicated and looted away their belongings. Fight over seats are common. Almost all trains are crowded with baggers and for god sake don't give them anything. This usually encourage them ,though begging is an offense in India but is never checked. Its for your benefit to take care of your own belongings. Sights of slum dwellers are common near the railways stations and railway tracks. The railway tracks are usually considered as public toilets by many !

Again it is up to you to decide whether you want to opt for train for a particular destination.

Some facts about Indian railways :

01. The routes cover a total length of 63,465 kms.
02. 14,444 trains are run daily.
03. Rs 20,000 cr (US $ 50 bn cash surplus) in 2007.
04. It is world's largest commercial or utility employer, with more than 1.6 million employees.

Many new schemes are being announced for the upgradation of Indian Railways including increasing the speed of train which is at now 120 Kmph (max). Also high speed corridors are also considered. What will be the future of Indian Railways after 10 years? Only time has the answer !!

The plight of Indian Railways

Much has been written about the Indian Railways all over in the newspapers, blogs and many other media sources. There have been numerous case studies at IIMs, Harvard and other B schools about the Lalu transforming Indian Railways into a world class rail service. But the truth is Railways are in a complete mess and the whole journey remains full of chaos. The affluent seldom travel (only exception is when the city is far away and there is no flight service available to the city) and thus the people who usually travel are working class (aka the great Indian middle class) or the poor section of the society or the daily passengers.

Let's take a whole look at the journey.

The Booking : Problems start even before you reach station ! Though the railway minister announce many new trains in each rail budget, the fact remains that you need to book your tickets at least one month before for prime routes or three weeks for non prime sectors. If you have the privilege of plastic money one can use the internet reservation service, which actually is a very good service, otherwise you have to stand in long queues at the booking window. The booking staff is usually the typical Indian government babu who has no sympathy towards the fellow standing people and move the things at his own discretion and will. Then there is the problem of touts which are omnipresent in each govt establishment. They will leave no stone unturned to rip you off. Now add to the confusion of which train to go by and on which route, reserving your ticket in itself is a big achievement !

The Station : Now you have got your tickets booked (vow!!) you head to the railway station happily to catch your train. An advice here : start your 'mission' to station well before the schedule time as the jams are imminent on all roads leading to station. So now you have made it to the station ... welcome to the world of stink. Here everything stinks , from the booking window to entrance halls to the platforms and last but not the least passengers (no i am not being racist here but this is the fact, so lets bear it). Then there is no proper space to park your car. The parking is managed by some locals who don't know the abc of prking rules. The haphazard parking add to the already chaotic traffic jam. Somehow, you make it to the platform on time only to 'discover' that the train is late by few hours (cor : not all trains arrive or depart late but yes, the probability of train running of schedule is very high). Also, there is a strange logic behind the trains running out of schedule or in exact word no logic at all. There are few trains who always run late without any specific reason and there are few who always leave at time. This has made the regular passengers expert that they can easily tell which train is good or bad (in terms of time). So it always pays for good to consult a local before making reservation for any particular train. Indian station even lacks the basic amenities. If you are traveling first time in a train then probably you will have to put a lot of effort only to know on which platform the train is scheduled to arrive/depart. More than ten platforms are common in big cities, so unfortunately if you entered the station from wrong side and the your platform is at other end, take my words : it will soak the energy out of you just to reach the other side of the platforms. There are no escalators, so you have to carry your luggage on your shoulders. You can have a coolie to carry your luggage but again he'll try every possible way to over charge you. There is no potable water and don't even dare to enter restrooms.

The food available on the platforms is unhygienic and can cause several air transmitted diseases or food poisoning. Rats are common on the railway tracks and they are so big that even cat will think twice before she can dare out her adventure to catch them. Given this huge population of rats it is simply not safe to deposit your luggage in the cloak room even the railways take no responsibility of your luggage being damaged by rats. There are whole lot of people on platform so no matter how early you come, you probably will never get any berth on the platform chair. Inside the station you can see whole India. People from many states and many walks of the life which keep the station abuzz with activities which anybody will simply find unbearable.

... to be concluded

Progress till now

Its been three days since i started working non this blog/web and I am almost 75pc done with it. Once i am done with this i want to spend one day testing all the links etc.

Getting the content ready is one of the major problem but it will automatically be over once members start posting ! The other problem working on the free online resources is that they don't provide you with much resources and bandwidth. So rather than being contempt with this i have to make full use what is available. The best thing is that everything is free !!!

Other than that i have started a new post in the community that we are going to bring few things but have not yet disclosed what they are as we are still not done with it. Sometimes it pays to hide things which are not finished while keeping the others guessing ;)

Lets see how much it pays, till then ..... keep guessing

We are evolving

We started 'Discuss the whole community' as an experimental community to promote the idea of speech and encourage people to debate on the issues the affect common people.

But now we are evolving ! We have planned to start our own portal and blog so that we can bring more and more good people under our umbrella.

How we are going to do things and what are the things that we have planned will be divulged later. This is the just the first post to let the world know that we are growing.

Write us at ww.orkut.com/Community.aspx?cmm=49359902 . This blog and our portal http://discussthewholeworld.googlepages.com are under development. So meanwhile you can check the progress and the process of evolution and yes

WE ARE EVOLVING !!!!
